Belgium's Prime Minister, Alexander De Croo, is calling for a global boycott of Russian #diamonds instead of an EU ban.
He believes that the only way to effectively stop the flow of Alrosa's diamonds is if Western nations adopt a ban with a #traceability system in place.
De Croo stated that Russian diamonds are "blood diamonds" and the revenue from diamonds for Russia can only be stopped if access to Western markets is no longer possible.
Belgium has seen a drop of about 80% in its #imports of Russian #gem quality diamonds due to unofficial boycotts by individual jewelers.
The country is working with its partners to create a solid front against Russian diamonds.
